Double Chin Treatment

A double chin can be a life-long issue or it can develop, or worsen, with age.

We now offer double chin treatment, non-surgically, using deoxycholic acid. The deoxycholic acid is administered using a series of small injections in the double chin.

Patients have 2-6 treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart, which significantly reduces under chin fat. This treatment has been proven to be safe and effective in over 20 clinical trials, involving 2600 patients. Deoxycholic acid has been approved for clinical use by the TGA in Australia, for treating submental fullness (double chin).

What is involved in the treatment for double chin?

Patients are given Panadol 1 hour prior to treatment, if desired.

Grid-like markings are applied to the area to be treated, marking the area to be treated, based on the anatomy of your neck.

The area is then cooled with an ice pack to create numbness. A series of small injections are then given, guided by the grid now marked on the unwanted double chin.

The procedure is quick and patients report the area feeling like it has had an internal sunburn. This discomfort can be managed with an ice pack.

What can patients expect after treatment?

Patients usually experience some swelling of the area after treatment. It is recommended, therefore, that patients select a treatment day after which they have no important social or work-related events and can remain at home, if swelling proves to be bothersome. Clothing with a high neck, such as a turtle neck jumper, can also camouflage this swelling.

After treatment, patients are requested to remain in the clinic, with ice on the area, for up to 30 minutes, to ensure that any swelling does not affect smiling or swallowing.

Exercise and alcohol should be avoided for 24 hours after treatment.

Some bruising may occur to the area. Make up can be worn to mask this, and can be applied before leaving the clinic.

How soon can patients expect to see results from treatment for double chin?

Most patients will not see any significant improvement until a few weeks after their second treatment. For this reason, one treatment is not available for purchase. It is only after the second treatment that results will begin to show.

Treatments are to be 6-8 weeks apart, and we will conduct a review appointment eight weeks after the second treatment.

Whether or not further treatments will be necessary, will be determined at this review appointment.
