Condition Overview

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which patients sweat excessively. Sweating can occur not only under the arms, but across the body, including the palms, the forehead and feet. Deodorants and antiperspirants may not be effective for those with hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis often creates social anxiety and therefore restriction in social activity, especially in warmer months. However, occasionally it can be a symptom of more serious medical conditions, such as some cancer, diabetes and heart problems. Therefore we recommend seeking medical advice if you think you are experiencing excess sweating.

Treatments for hyperhidrosis

There are a range of treatments available including creams, oral medication, surgery, nerve therapy, microwave therapy and botulinum toxin type A treatment (commonly known as Botox). The best treatment option for a given patient is determined in consultation with a dermatologist, as not all treatments are suitable for all patients.

Are hyperhidrosis treatments safe and effective?

The various treatments carry different levels of efficacy and different risks. Those with fewer risks and costs are likely to be tried before more serious treatment options are considered. Botulinum toxin type A injections are a very common treatment, in hyperhidrosis patients of all ages, and can be effective for 4-6 months.

Are there any treatments I can try at home?

We recommend trying a strong anti-perspirant as a good first step, even on hands and body, not just under the arms. This can significantly reduce sweating and may make the condition manageable for some individuals.
