Condition Overview

Scars are a common occurrence throughout life as part of the natural healing process after an injury. An area of fibrous tissue replaces normal skin. This new tissue is composed of the same collagen as regular skin, but its composition changes from the basket weave formation of normal skin.

This resulting skin is usually inferior in quality, less resistant to UV radiation, and sweat glands and hair follicles do not grow back. It is more susceptible to stretching, is usually coloured differently and can be troublesome to patients in many ways, such as being disfiguring (especially on the face), stiffer or harder than regular skin, itchy, sunken, contracted, pigmented and causing distortion to surrounding skin.

For all these reasons, patients are often interested in treating scars to reduce their appearance.

Treatments for scars

The treatment for scars differs, depending on the type of scar, the skin type of the patient and the extent of the scarring.

Treatment options include vascular lasers, to lessen redness; intralesional steroids to reduce raised keloid scars; subcision or punch excision to remove scars, Fraxel or Carbon Dioxide lasers to resurface the skin fillers to plump up depressed skin; and more.

What types of scars that can be treated?

Most scars can be improved with treatment. Common scars for which we see patients include keloid scars, self harm scars, acne scars, post-operative scars and scars on the face.
