Condition Overview

It’s very common to experience raised skin bumps, such as moles, barnacles and skin tags.

Moles are a localised proliferation of pigmented cells that appear as flesh-coloured or dark spots which can be raised or flat. They can be present from birth or appear as we age. Those present in childhood tend to be more prominent and persistent. While most moles are medically harmless, then can be cosmetically troublesome and become a nuisance if they’re located in an area that results in irritation from brushing or combing, shaving or rubbing against clothing or straps.

Barnacles are small mounds of dry, crusty cells that appear as we age. The formal name for these lesions is seborrhoeic keratoses and they’re a side effect of ageing and sun damage.

Are moles and other lumps medically serious?

Many moles and bumps are not medically serious. However, if you notice a change to a mole or bump you’ve had for a long time, or a new mole or bump appears on your skin, it should be checked by a dermatologist to ensure it is not skin cancer.

Because it is important to catch skin cancers early, we recommend regular skin checks by a dermatologist, particularly for people with fairer skin, who have been raised in Australia.

Treatment for moles and other lumps

Treatment for your mole or other lumps can depend on the size of the lesion, the number of lesions you’d like removed, and where the lesion appears on your body.

Options include excision to cut out the lesion, use of a pigment laser to reduce brown colouring, or the use of an ablative laser, which will flatten the bump.

There are also skin rejuvenation options that allow for treatment of moles or bumps, along with other skin conditions, including our signature Walter Nolan Multi-Laser Procedure, and full face resurfacing. These options can be discussed with our dermatologist, and can be tailored to target the specific range of symptoms you’re experiencing, and your skin improvement goals.
