Laser Treatment for Self Harm Scars
Living with self-harm scars can serve as a constant reminder of difficult times. We recognise the significant benefit that can be experienced when these scars are treated.
Self-harm scars can take many forms, including red or white scars, hypertrophic and keloid scars, self-harm burn scars, tattoos or ink markings, and even skin graft scars from past attempts to cover them. These scars can appear on various areas of the body, such as the legs, arms, or other visible places. Most scar types respond well to treatment with lasers.

What treatments exist for self injury scars?
Treatment options will be determined by our dermatologist, who can review the types of scars you have and your skin tone, as well as any underlying conditions that may need to be factored in to the decision.
Fraxel lasers are often the best choice for scar reduction. Fraxel lasers make tiny holes in the skin, causing fibroblast cells in the dermis layer to be triggered to produce new collagen, which helps minimise the appearance of the scars. Fraxel lasers are used on many different types of scars and are effective in the treatment of self harm scars.
Vascular lasers can be used to treat redness in scars. This laser does not break the skin, so treatments require less significant pain killers or downtime.
Thickened or keloid scars often require intralesional injections with cortisone, in addition to laser treatment.
Pigmented lasers may be appropriate to remove tattoos or ink marks.

Can Laser Treatment Remove Self Harm Scars?
Most self-harm scars respond well to laser treatment. Our dermatologist will assess your scars, skin tone, and any underlying conditions to create a tailored treatment plan.
- Fraxel lasers: These are highly effective for reducing self-harm scars by stimulating collagen production. They create tiny holes in the dermis, prompting the skin to regenerate and improve the scar’s appearance.
- Vascular lasers: Ideal for reducing redness in scars, these lasers work without breaking the skin, resulting in less pain and minimal downtime.
- Pigment lasers: Used to remove tattoos or ink marks associated with self-harm.
