Condition Overview

Living with self injury scars can be a distressing reminder of troubling or traumatic times in the past. We recognise the significant benefit that can be experienced when these scars are treated.

Self injury scars can take many forms, including red scars from cuts or stabs, white scars, hypertrophic & keloid scars, tattoos or ink-based markings and the unsightly skin graft scars from attempts to cover self injury scars.

Most scar types respond well to treatment with lasers.

What treatments exist for self injury scars?

Treatment options will be determined by our dermatologist, who can review the types of scars you have and your skin tone, as well as any underlying conditions that may need to be factored in to the decision.

Fraxel lasers are often the best choice for scar reduction. Fraxel lasers make tiny holes in the skin, causing fibroblast cells in the dermis layer to be triggered to produce new collagen, which helps minimise the appearance of the scars. Fraxel lasers are used on many different types of scars and are effective in the treatment of self harm scars.

Vascular lasers can be used to treat redness in scars. This laser does not break the skin, so treatments require less significant pain killers or downtime.

Thickened or keloid scars often require intralesional injections with cortisone, in addition to laser treatment.

Pigmented lasers may be appropriate to remove tattoos or ink marks.

Sensitivity to the needs of self injury scar patients

Our staff are highly compassionate and have experience working with patients with sensitive issues, including histories of self-cutting, burning, picking and more.

Our private consult rooms and medical experience makes the process of treating the scars from such a traumatic experience more comfortable and less distressing.

We’re also able to work with other treating professionals, including psychologists, to ensure wholistic patient care is offered.
