Condition Overview

Most people who have lived in Australia experience some degree of sun damage, due to our harsh sub-tropical climate and outdoor lifestyle. Sun damage includes sallow, blotchy skin, irregular brown pigmentation, visible blood vessels, loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles and frown lines, sun spots and a rough skin texture. All of these symptoms can be treated to improve the look and feel of sun-damaged skin. Symptoms can be treated individually, or as part of an overall skin rejuvenation program.

Treatments for sun damage

Sun damaged skin should be regularly reviewed by a dermatologist to ensure skin isn’t affected by skin cancers.

Once confident that no cancer is present, a range of treatment options exist to address the wide variety of sun damage symptoms. The treatment best suited to a patient will depend on the specific symptoms and severity of those symptoms, skin type, and the budget.

Common options include:

Targeted laser treatments: These include pigmented laser to treat brown spots and pigment, or vascular laser to treat redness,

Rejuvenation treatments; Rejuvenation treatments address a wider range of sun damage symptoms in the one treatment program. In this category, there is further choice of options, depending on symptoms, severity and budget, but can include:

  • The Walter Nolan Multi-Laser Procedure – our signature and bespoke rejuvenation program which uses up to four lasers, depending on symptoms involves two, three or four treatment sessions.
  • Intense Pulsed Light treatments – a gentle light-based treatment that gradually evens out skin tone and reduces signs of sun damage. Regular treatments are recommended.
  • Laser skin resurfacing – this invasive treatment provides significant improvement in most symptoms of sun damage. It requires a significant amount of down time and may not be suitable for all patients. However, results are long-lasting and can be the most effective for some patients.

Is sun damage medically serious?

The term “sun damage” refers to a wide variety of effects of the sun on skin. Some of those effects can be serious, such as skin cancer. However, most symptoms of sun damage are cosmetic and are not medically serious. Treatments are considered because they’re desirable from a cosmetic point of view. However, it is important that sun damage symptoms be reviewed by a dermatologist to ensure they are not serious or require further medical action.

How do I know which sun damage treatment is right for me?

Because of the wide range of options available to us at NBLDC, thanks to our 18 laser, light and energy based treatments available, it’s important that you consult with our dermatologist first. That consultation will ensure no underlying and medically serious issues are present in the skin.
